If your computer is not properly protected, you may be vulnerable to having your computer accessed by hackers. Should your computer’s security get breached, you could experience a variety of problems including ransomware, data theft & access to your webcam. If hackers have the ability to access your computer, they can activate your webcam without you knowing it. A problem like this can lead to a host of potential issues for the computer owner.Charlotte’s NBC affiliate, WCNC News, stopped by our office to meet with our CEO (Tom Blanchard) about webcam security. Check out the video above to see the WCNC News story. Here are some quick tips & tricks to making sure your webcam doesn’t get hacked

  1. Put a piece of tape over your webcam
  2. Pay attention to the light on your webcam. Many webcams have a small indicator light next to them that is hardwired to turn on if the webcam is active. If you see the indicator light on and you’re not using your computer, you’ve got a problem
  3. Periodically check the processes running on your computer to see of the webcam process is running in the background
  4. Don’t allow access to your computer in the first place. Most of us aren’t being intentionally targeted by hackers. The most common way they access their victim’s computers requires interaction from the victim. The user of the computer clicks on a malicious link in a phishing email, downloads software from a website, etc. Once the software is installed, they hackers then have access to your computer. The best way to prevent this is to make sure your computer is properly protected with up to date antivirus software. You’ll also want to make sure you’ve performed all the critical operating system (Apple or PC) updates for your computer. Lastly, a little user education goes a long way. Learning to spot phishing emails & websites can go a long way to making sure you don’t experience a security breach.
